that won't help
How do you shut down or reboot? Are you clicking on the start globe and then "Shutdown" or "restart"?
Usually when a change does not stay its because Windows was not shutdown properly.
If that is not the problem there could be a corruption in the Windows status and an uninstall/reinstall usually takes care of that. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the IDT and then LEFT click "uninstall". DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. Then set the stereo mix as default and then restart the PC again and check to see if it fixed it.
I have the same problem. I've tried everything listed above. The mic always reverts after restart to the built in.
It was Skype. Skype changes Windows defaults!?!? Apps should never do this. At least ask first; give some kind of warning. I've wasted a whole day tracking this down. The solution: uninstall Skype. And that's my final answer. It stays off. Good riddance.
Message to Skype: "This is my computer. It's my OS. I configure it."
After restart my settings remain, because that's what setting do, they get set and bloody stay set. And yes I tried everything to get Skype to play nice. Only uninstalling made a difference. Yes I already tried "that" (whatever you are about suggest), remember all day, 12 hours of my life sucked away. But now all my other audio apps work fine. They get along. They don't break each other. They access various audio devices without changing OS defaults. What a concept.
