SAPPHIRE HD 3870 connected to TV via HDMI no sound

    www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/228558-hdmi-sound-output-problems-2.html

    Dear Experts

I am using windows 7 64 bit on my desktop (motherboard ASUS P5E)
    ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS P5E

And I installed VGA SAPPHIRE HD 3870 (ATI RADEON Technology) 512 MB.

This VGA has a converter plug from DVI to HDMI.

Connected a 3 m HDMI cable from a converter to the Samsung TV.

I can see a picture on the TV but no sound

    What I did for troubleshooting

1- download latest driver from AMD website from the link below :
    AMD Catalyst

2- Follow the instructions here :
How to Set Up Audio on an ATI Radeon HD | eHow.com

No audio from HDTV when playing audio / video from a computer system

3- Digital Audio (HDMI) option was grayed out (not clickable) as can be seen in the snapshot below :

What is a Sapphire HD 3879? I can't find that model. I see a Sapphire HD 3870, is that what you mean?

Regardless, you aren't getting audio because DVI doesn't carry audio, so converting from DVI to HDMI won't give you audio.

Yes it is a typo , it should be 3870 not 3879.
I did modify the first post to rectify this correction

Regardless, you aren't getting audio because DVI doesn't carry audio, so converting from DVI to HDMI won't give you audio.
I see, then if I need to get audio via HDMI cable t , I need to buy VGA card that has HDMI port built it ,,,Isn't it ?

    Regards

It does on any ATI/AMD card from the HD 2xxx series and up that doesn't come with a HDMI port, as long as you use the DVI-HDMI adapter that comes with the card. It will not work with a normal DVI-HDMI adapter. It also only works from one of the DVI ports.

Now with that said from looking at the screen shot posted there are no drivers for either the onboard audio or the audio built into the video card. Try running the Catalyst install again, only this time do a custom install and make sure that it is installing the AMD HDMI Audio driver.

The converter that I am suing has a pattern with ATI RADEON GRAPHICS,,,,And i am pretty sure that this came with VGA , because I got 3 of them and I have got 3 converters.

I installed it 4 times , as costume installation not as express because I followed the below :

Did it show the HDMI driver in the list?

You can also get the standalone driver directly from Realtek,

    Realtek

"ATI HDMI Audio Device R2.70 2012/6/22" is the one you want.

If you have audio over DVI, then you need to look in your playback devices and select the correct audio playback device. Audio drivers should have been installed, so there should be no reason to download the drivers from Realtek.

I know this is was already highlighted by stormy13, please refer to the quote in the URL below

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/gra...deon_hd_3870/1

The DVI-to-HDMI connector also accepts audio too, as every ATI Radeon graphics card since the Radeon HD 2900 XT features built-in support for 5.1 audio over HDMI.

"ATI HDMI Audio Device R2.70 2012/6/22" is the one you want.
    Didn't help me out
