No Sound In Windows 7 With Medion PC.

Hey there

I bought a pc from aldi back about 5 years ago i have still got the link to it with the full spec.

MEDION MD 8822 Entertainment PC

It is the medion MD8822

I have partitioned my hard drive and got xp running beside windows 7.

Everything is fine other than on windows 7 there is no sound what so ever, it says that it is playing (as in volume properties the sound bar moves) But nothing heard.

I have read something about it might be where it is a triple capture device so has realtek and nvidia graphics and these need to be installed a certain way, but am a bit of a newbie and cant seemto do it.

I have been to medions web site and can not find a windows 7 download this has been bugging me now for ages.

Any help would really be appreciated

Kind Regards
Tom

That link doesn't really say much about it, other than it came with Vista 32 bit and only has 1GB of RAM (not minimally enough for anything but Win 7 Home). Also with only 1GB of RAM, you don't need a 64 bit OS as the prime reason for a 64 bit OS is that it can address more than 4GB of RAM. As it came with Vista, the Vista sound drivers will work with Win 7.

For the sound, the first thing to check is the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel. In the playback section, your "Speakers" (sound device) should be set as the default playback device. You can also click the configure button and make sure you have the correct speaker type set and then test the speakers.

If it all works correctly with the speaker test, there could be a corruption between the sound device and Windows. In that case, go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for your sound device to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall" DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This clears up a lot of problems and may take care of yours.

it has got 2gb of memory, sorry should have said that earlier.

And yes been into device manager and tried uninstalling but still nothing.

The sound works fine under xp but not windows 7 i have found a file in windows xp
called Virtual Cable.

But this is not in windows 7 i believe this might be what enables it to work but not sure if i even need this for windows 7.

I am going to be installing service pack 1 on it todayand see if that finds anything but i doubt it.

I have tried using driver genius professionlal and will be using uniblue driverscanner later to try and help sort this.

Virtual Cable is a program that allows recording streaming audio from the Internet if you don't have the "System Mixer" function.

Also, you can't compare XP with Vista/Windows as a different driver is used. Vista/Win 7 handle some of the audio function differently and require a different driver. Generally, the driver from the Vendor is best option as non-Vendor drivers may not work or work correctly. In the absense of vendor drivers then you have to look elsewhere and the device vendor is a good first choice. e.g. if you have RealTek audio then check the RealTek site. If you have IDT then the IDT site, etc.

Beware of Registry repair programs (I know uniblue has one) as they can cause more problems than they fix. They may be masquerated as a "speed up" program or a "repair" program. Generally, registry repair programs are mostly "snake oil".
