Windows 7: NO SOUND and my Realtek HD Audio will not open from the control panel

When In Doubt, Read The Manual

All,
After spending several hours of "no sound 5.1 troubleshooting", I looked at the manual for my new P8Z77-V motherboard and noticed the plugs in a different pattern. Instead of "3 in a row of "orange, black, gray", it was "orange, black, green". The "gray plug" goes in the "green port".
Now I have perfect sound.

Sound Control panel takes 2 minutes to open; HDMI sound inconsistent
Brand new Windows 7 Home Premium (6 bit) computer. When I click on the Sound control panel item, sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to open. Can't open sound control panel
dont know what when wrong but I cannot access my audio devices control panel. Control Panel...Hardware and Sound..Manage Audio Devices. Nothing happens. Only a brief flicker. I also cannot change system sounds. Any idea what could be the problem? or at least how to go about debugging it.
