Ventrilo causing loss of audio on all applications, fix on reboot.

Hi, I wasn't sure if this would be the right place to post this or not, I am sorry if it isnt.

So I have been having this problem for several months now. While playing video games online with ventrilo, or any other VOIP, randomly it would cause all of my playback audio to stop. I wont hear sounds from ventrilo, or the game, or anything. It also causes videos such as those from YouTube to play slowly and very choppy. It is very random, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes it only takes twenty minutes to go off, and sometimes it takes several hours. There is no indication that something is wrong, other than the lack of sound. My drivers are up to date and it is still registering the sounds, it just isn't playing them. It fixes itself on a reboot though, so it is just a little frustrating.

I have been unable to find out why this is happening. I am thinking it may have something to do with the headset I am using. It is fairly old and has a USB attachment I can plug the microphone and earphone plugs into, but the USB plug isn't working so I plugged the other two directly into my PC. Perhaps that is doing it? I am not really tech savvy so I could really use some help. Thanks in advance

If it's old it's possible the drivers are just outdated.
Try searching for new ones using google and the model information from the headset.
Barring that I have found this simple change to the power plan solves a lot of problems with older usb driven devices.
    To Disable Selective Suspend:

    open the control panel
go to power options (you may have to set view to small icons)
    click change plan settings
    in the window that opens:
    click change plan settings
click change advanced power settings, expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.

I did some more searching around and found this thread:
    audiodg.exe + Ventrilo problem

It said that vent was causing a memory leak and that audiodg.exe ended up using a rather large amount of data, causing videos to play slow and sound to stop. It sounds like my problem. I did some playing around by ending the audiodg.exe process and all audio stopped. Then I restarted the windows audio service itself using services.msc and the sound came back. The next time this happens I'll make sure to check if it is this problem causing it.
