Problem with my computer making the Windows Error sound?

Hi, Recently my computer started making a noise intermittently. The frequency has increased to a point where it is getting extremely annoying, (about once every 75 seconds).

I have gone through all the sounds on my Sound Scheme and have isolated it to the Windows Error sound listed under Windows Asterisk. But I have not been able to detect what Windows Error is causing this. Everything appears to be running properly.

I would love to know if I am alone out here or if anyone else has run into this problem and if so, how did you resolve it!

This would appear to not be a "Sound Problem" this section, but rather some application is generating the sound, or its a real problem, that you haven't found yet.

Well, yes I am sure you are correct, but what's your point?

Are you saying that I should post this under a different section instead of Sound and Audio? I posted it here because the problem I am having is an annoying sound

There isn't anything obvious, other than the annoying beeps. And all my software appears to function properly.

I suggested another section because its not a problem with your PC's sound card (or integrated sound) but rather an apparent issue that some program is generating the sound. The programs may be functioning properly, but the beep that is being generated is for some other reason than an error.

Start by looking at what programs are in startup and what is in the "Notification Area' (Used to be called Sys Tray) in the lower right of the task bar. One of those may be the culprit. Look at what is in the start up folder and what is in the startup in the System Configuration (msconfig) Startup section.

Another possibility is some type of RF interference getting into the speaker system. Does it do it with a headphone too?

Thanks Fireberd,

I have checked my Notification Area, Task Manager, and msconfig. Nothing new there, which makes sense because I haven't installed any new programs. The programs on my computer have been on there for several months. Out of the blue, this problem just started 3 days ago.

I do not have a headphone, so I don't know know whether the problem exists when using a headphone.

I understand why you are saying it's not a sound problem, but this forum looked like the most appropriately titled forum in which to post my question!

You don't have a headset, but do you have a set of earbuds such as come with many MP3 players? They will work. Also disconnect your speakers from the PC, leave them powered on and see if you still hear the beep.

Do a malware/spyware scan (with an up to date scanner) and see if that shows up anything. If you don't have a malware program, download Malwarebytes and run a scan with that (Malwarebytes is the main program that most security experts suggest and use).

I can't disconnect the speakers, I'm using an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with integral speakers.

When I use my earbuds, I only hear the beep in one ear

I am running the latest versions of Avira AntiVir Personal 10.2 (real time protection turned on), Lavasoft's AdAware and Advanced SystemCare 5.0!

I think you are on to something. It must be a conflict between Avira and AdAware because I have had Avira running in the background with Realtime Protection. I just opened it up and told it to run a full system scan. Every time I hear the beep, there is another entry in the Events Overview showing Malware found. When I click on the details it reads Virus or unwanted program 'ADWARE/InstallCore.1.40 [adware]' detected in file 'C:\Users\Tangledbloom\Downloads\FLVPlayerSetup.exe. Action performed: Deny access

Strange because I have had all three of them running for several months and this just started earlier in the week.

Thanks for your help, now if I can just figure out how to resolve the conflict, I can make the issue go away!

Malwarebytes is the current "preferred" malware/spyware program. Also, if you have more than one malware/spyware program running they can conflict and cause problems.

I recently started doing some contract work here in Ohio. My regular PC expert back in North Carolina, who happens to work for HP, doesn't like Malewarebytes.

I am aware that running more than one Maleware program can cause conflicts. However, it is strange that I have been running the same three programs ever since I can remember, and yet this issue just began this week!

Anyway, I am very grateful for your assistance. Thank you very much for your helping me resolve this issue!

Like Fireberd said, running two apps like this might not be best.

No, you are not running all three. FLVPlayerSetup.exe is just the installer and that it the only thing being flagged because it brings in advertizements. Once the player is installed, the "risk" of advertizements go away. Delete the installer and your anti-malware software will be happy.
