| Windows 7: Can't play any music files, error 0x80070057 |

I noticed one more thing: I tried to update my soundcard drivers, but after installation and reboot (as in the installation's instructions), there is no sound. the volume icon in tray has got a red "X" mark next to it. when I hover with mouse over it, the message "no audio output device is installed" appears. however, when I go to Device Manager I can see the device is detected and it's turned on. when I go to sound settings in Control Panel, I can see "Realtek High Definition Audio" in output devices and there's a green tick showing that it's turned on and selected. it happens with drivers from both Lenovo and Realtek sites. the only way I can get sound output back is via using System Restoration tool, but the problem with music files still persists. | My System Specs |

You say your drivers are fine correct. You say you can play music of web pages? excuse me for sounding silly but you sure you have it in the right output for sound as i remember a time i could only hear music from webpages and my media players were set to a different output?
Failing that have you tried going over the basics if your drivers are fine and so is your webpages ?
Delete all your media players and install one by one as something could be conflicting?
Take a print screen on your sound devices? thanks | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32x CPU Backup P4 Dual Core HT Atm..... :( Memory 8GB Graphics Card 8400gs 1GB Monitor(s) Displays Samsung Syncmaster 2032 Screen Resolution 1680x1050 Keyboard Logitech RAZ71 Keyboard Mouse Logitech RAZ71 Wireless Mouse PSU 500w PSU Case Asus Gaming Case Cooling 3 Fans ( Soon To Be Hyrdro) Hard Drives 1 TB WD

dexis, you may be on to something there with your last post.
Other than what I already suggested to najo the only other solutions to try would be as you pointed out.
Checking to make sure of the outputs.
Deleting the sound card drivers, and then doing a restart to let Windows reinstall them. Even if there is no red X or in Device Manager.
Deleting all media players then reinstalling, and checking the playback of each, one by one.
If one works, you could install another until/if there is a conflict.
Make sure you have the latest, and greatest from the official site.
For foobar2000 and optional components it's 1.1.14a. Although, I have seen instances where older versions worked better then newer.
Found this on FB2's FAQS page: Quote: “This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.”
This error message is not related to the component's configuration data that is stored in the foobar2000 configuration file. Rather, the error message is returned by Windows when foobar2000 tries to load a component DLL and Windows cannot find a DLL that the component requires. Often this is a particular version of the Visual C++ runtime that is not installed on your computer. Please check the component's documentation – especially the installation instructions – for information about any required DLLs.
Source: foobar2000: Frequently Asked Questions Your not having a failure to start, you just can't hear sound, but it backs-up the re-installation tips.
As a last resort, and to check if you do have a .dll problem run a SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker, and run it three times as pointed out in Option Two's blue Note box.
It does not say it, but restart your machine before going on to the next run of SFC. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Gateway DX4831e (Mid-Tower Desktop) OS Win 7 Home Premium 64bit Ver 6.1.7600 Build 7601 - SP1 CPU Intel i3 530 2.93GHz, 2933MHz 2 Cores 4 Logical Processors Motherboard Gateway H57M01 133 megahertz Memory 6GB of 1,333MHz DDR3 SDRAM Graphics Card 32MB Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD IGChip Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Gateway HX2000 20inch TFT active matrix TN Screen Resolution 1600 x 900 x 59 hertz Keyboard MS 'Natural' Standard PS/2 Enhanced 101-102 Key Mouse Gateway USB wired optical PSU 300watts. also: sound output in FB is selected to Realtek HD Audio speakers. when I switch to "basing audio driver", I get the same error. when I select "Null Output" the error doesn't appear, but for obvious reasons it doesn't help much | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Lenovo Z580 OS Windows 7 Home Premium x64 CPU Intel Core i5-3210M 2.50 GHz Motherboard Lenovo U3E1 Memory 4 GB Graphics Card Intel HD 4000/nVidia GeForce GT 630M Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 Mouse Synaptics Touchpad Hard Drives HDD 700 GB Internet Speed 5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload |

In my email notification the "driver" part in "basing audio driver" had this link Windows Drivers | Download & Update Windows Drivers | Easy Driver Pro masked as drivers Note You should not be using that site to update your machine. One should always use the Manufacturers site first (Lenovo), then maybe the vendors site (Realtek). Never from a third-party site!
If this is a newer driver than what you have you should download the realtek driver from here: Lenovo Support - Realtek Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Z580
Or check this, it has more: Drivers and software - IdeaPad Z580 Notebook
Download the Realtek driver to your desktop.
Then when you uninstall the Realtek driver from Device Manager, and restart your machine, point Windows to it when it asks you if you have the driver.
I did not check to see if your machine or Lenovo has an update assistant, where you can enter your machine's numbers, and Lenovo's site will serve up a custom list of available drivers specifically for your machine.

Yes, please attach it to your next post. Either within a code box or if it is too big a .zip file.

It may have been a 7F server problem, I noticed yesterday when I tried to log-in my browsers were telling me that 7F could not be found.
I just found this: http://www.sevenforums.com/vip/252155-dns-attack.html You may or may not be able to view this, it depends on your VIP status.

Did you try checking this site Drivers and software - IdeaPad Z580 Notebook while using your flavor of Internet Explorer (IE)? I noticed Lenovo's Auto-Detect feature will only work if you are using IE. (Important!)
I moved this Quote down for my train of thought, to me this is acting like a virus or interference from an anti-malware product, and/or its leftovers:

I have been reading up on your 70057 error, and it seems that it can be caused by many different OS problems, some we have covered, some we have not. Please check the source link in this Quote. Go over the steps in the Answer, especially: I mention this because of this link: IdeaPad Z580 Laptop Specs | lenovo.com It shows that McAfee should have been shipped with your 580.
If you did remove McAfee, without the aid of the MCPR tool, please use the MCPR tool Here, it is a direct download or if that makes you uncomfortable you can search for it, sites like Majorgeeks offer it.
For whatever reason, McAfee can't find their own removal tool in the first link to them on the MA list.
You haven't mention as to what anti-malware product(s) you do use, it would help if you would use MSE only, at least to test!
Remember if you have anything other than MSE it will have to be removed, and it only applies to real-time products. (End)

Whew!! That sure is a lot, but there was some catching up to do.
The important part though is what I posted between (Important!), and (End)
I will also want to discuss your System Restore once we get your 580 straightened out, some of these errors may still reside there, so don't use it unless you really have to.
Post that scan log from SFC, and go over those steps.

so. I've deleted the remnants of McAffee. I've been using Eset Smart Security (which hasn't found any viruses by the way), but I've been reading about MSE and I think I'll just, ahem, take off my black eye-patch I've also used ESETuninstaller before installing MSE, which is now doing another scan.
the log is, well, HUGE, so I'll better put it in an attachment.
I'll check Lenovo site via IE in a minute, although I doubt it will find anything other than I did manually. it looks like there's only one "flavour" of Z580 laptop (back in days I owned Y550, when I was downloading drivers from Lenovo site, after selecting Y550 model, I had to choose some kind of sub-version, which isn't a case with my Z580).
edit: auto-detect function works only with Think series. however, I'm sure I've downloaded the right drivers.
I was also wondering if it could be some codec's fault?
