Broken mic just after logging out

I was talking to some friends over skype when i needed to log out and my mic was fine there were no problems with it. i logged out and when i logged back in and called a friend up on skype he could not hear me talking the only thing he could hear was a loud static noise. i went to configure the settings but it said i tried everything and it would still make the noise. i tried plugging in a brand new mic that has never been used before i took it out of the packaging and plugged it in and still the same problem. i have windows 7 home premium x64 does any one know what could be causing this problem and how to fix it? thanks.

As this is a recent problem, use the System Restore and restore your PC back to a date when it last worked OK.
    That should fix it.

System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. System Restore will not delete any e-mails or user data.

It may very well be worth checking out both your Skype settings and Windows settings to make sure that neither has become confused about which device it should use to input. To check these:

    Windows
Right-click the little speaker icon next to the clock and select Recording devices.
Make sure that the microphone is set as Default Device.

    Skype
    Click Tools and select Options.
In Audio Settings make sure that the Microphone displays the correct input device.

Without knowing what you're using as a microphone, or where it is plugged in, I can't really be more specific on what you should expect these settings to be for them to correctly work.
