I am Puzzeled by my PC's Sound system... help!

I have lost partial sound from my PC. I get no sound when running YouTube videos, CDs, DVDs, etc. However, when I run my Cubase (digital recording studio), I get full sound. When I run a test on the Realtek soundcard, it appears to be working properly, but still no sound. I re-installed the drivers for the soundcard, I've changed out the cables, I've run registry repair and virus sweep software. I got the Geek Squad to help, and after 4 hours and the installation of Flash, Java and multiple other programs, I still get no sound. Any suggestions?

    I have a Sonar X1 studio.

What is shown in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Playback section? Is the "Speakers" set as the default audio playback device? Also in the Sound Panel Recording section, is the "System Mixer" set as the default Recording device?

In many cases a recording program handles the audio different than media players do and usually use either ASIO or WDM drivers for the sound.
