creative x-fi titanium fatal1ty pro issues

i just got a headset (turtle beach dx12) to use for gaming. all my friends use ventrilo to voice chat. when i plugged the new headset in, it worked except if i was listening to music it would play the music i was listening to in the background behind my voice even though it wasn't loud enough to be heard through the mic. also it would broadcast loud music/loud game sounds to my friends even though the mic was muted. this is on my dell xps 8300 with a creative xfi xtreme card. i had a x-fi titanium fatal1ty pro in my old pc so i put it in the new pc. i had the same issues. i messed with the settings trying to get it to work correctly but it still plays the music and the background and still broadcasts loud music/game sounds. does anyone have an idea what would be causing this issue?
