Windows 7: help - no sound after clean install of W7 prof on ASUS M2N-SLI mb

I have just completed a clean install of W7Prof 64x on a DIY computer that uses an ASUS M2N-SLI mb. The machine had been using XP3 w/ no sound problems. The new OS seems to be operating correctly except that there is no sound output at either the front or rear audio jacks. Device manager shows that the generic drivers are installed and the port is operational. Windows cannot find "better" drivers than those installed. The sound ap in Control Panel shows "no front headphones installed." I have chased down sound drivers for this [old] motherboard from ASUS, but they don't list anything for Windows 7 and this MB. Some commercial programs claim to find the needed drivers, but want $$$ to install them. Under XP, the motherboard installation disk installed MAX AUDIO drivers. However, that disk won't run in the present OS environment. So, is this a setup problem under Windows 7, or do I need new drivers that I can't seem to find anywhere [for free], or is the MB is too old for Windows 7 [downer]?. Help and suggestions most appreciated. Happy Holidays.

i had the same issue on a customers Asus M2N-MX and found installing the vista drivers fixed it.

maybe try the drivers from one of those links and you may also have to fiddle around with settings turning options on and off in the drivers console bottom right of the taskbar can also make a difference assuming they installed ok but still aren't working ?

Not to beat the bush here, but that mobo doesn't support windows 7. Like ickymay sated, use the Vista 64 bit driver.

Note; my mobo doesn't have any drivers for windows 8 because it doesn't support it. You might want to upgrade the mobo...if possible.

Well, I checked with the MS compatibility site, and they say the MB is compatible... not that it is, just that the site says it is. I tried to download the Vista 64 bit drivers. The subsequent download was a zipped folder that gave me some headaches to unravel. When I finally found some EXE files to run, the system burped, saying that the particular file(s) won't run under the installed OS. I may be stumbling around a bit, what with the new OS and associated learning curve. That said, no joy just yet. I had been thinking of a new MB/CPU before the install, but went ahead anyway. With the exception of the audio, all "seems" well.

And off topic, any suggestions for a MB/CPU that is in the middle of the performance range? Thanks.

Put freeware 7-ZIP (x64 edition) on yer pc
- solves yer unzip problems.
In the (right click on icon) the zip menus click "Extract here"

Load your driver as vista 64bit SP?x compatable

Thanks for both the 7_zip and download advise. After much wandering, I got to the correct Asus download page for Vista 64x. The driver was for SOUND MAX which was what the original M2N-SLI install disk loaded. That gave me hope. After unzipping the file, it loaded without a hitch. Now, in device manager and in the Control Panel, the Windows 7 "high definition digital audio" has been replaced by the SoundMax program. Sound comes out of all speakers as expected. And, perhaps because of pent up frustration, it seems to sound "better." Go figure... Again, thanks to all who responded. Very much appreciate having help at hand. Best in 2013.
