No sound after PSU switch(old one stopped working)

Hello!

Here is my problem with a little back story.

On the night of 22nd December everything was fine. I went to bed and left the computer running to watch a movie(Pulled out the Headphones[front jack] to activate the speakers[rear jack]). I used the program "Hot Keyboard Pro" to shut my PC down(I fell a sleep before the PC shut down). When I woke up the next morning and pressed my PC power button nothing happened. So I bought a new PSU today and switched it out.

Now the PC is working just fine except there is no sound. I checked in the device manager, under "Sound, video and game controllers", it shows "Realtek High Definition Audio". And when I double-click it, the "Device Status" is "This device is working properly".

When I open my Playback devices, it shows that my headphones(front 3.5mm jack) are plugged in but my speakers(rear 3.5mm jack) aren't. Also my microphone, which is in the rear jack, shows in unplugged. And what I noticed is that, when I turn something that should generate sound on(Youtube for example), the volume levels start moving in the volume mixer.

Here you can find my hardware:

(And I have another small question, is it normal for new PSU-s to smell a bit? Like this weird electric smell.)

Unplug mic and headset and reboot...then check sound with speakers, if it works then check with headset and mic.

I tested the speakers in the rear and front. In the rear I got nothing but when I connected them in the front I got this weird glitchy sound. Then I tried the headphones and I got nothing in the rear jack or in the front. In front it recognizes that the device is plugged in but I get no sound.

Also when I connect to ventrilo for example I get this error: "Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device. DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed. HR=DSERR_NODRIVER. No sound driver is available for use".

Try re-installing your sound driver...from the vendors website...not through windows.

I uninstalled the "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver" from "Programs and Features", then rebooted and windows automatically installed the drivers. Since I didn't know how to stop it, I just reinstalled(from the realtek site[Realtek <---- 64bits Vista, Windows7, Windows8 Driver only (Executable file), don't know if they are right ones.]) the drivers and rebooted again. Now it doesn't even recognize that my headphones are connected. Front or rear.

Is it possible that the PSU fried my integrated sound card?

Did you unplug the front audio cable from the motherboard when you changed the PSU? If not, check to see if you've dislodged the cable in any way.

A new PSU shouldn't smell. Are you getting a hissing sound as well?

When installing the new psu, there could have been some static discharge which could have possibly fried your onboard sound chip. Did you use an anti-static wrist band?

@Dwarf

I checked all the cables before I closed it up, everything was good. And the PSU isn't hissing. And the smell is almost gone. Probably just a new PSU smell. It wasn't like burning. More like chemicals or something. Thanks though.

@bassfisher6522

No I didn't use any anti-static wrist band. And I didn't see or feel any static electricity. But what did happen was I connected the speakers(in the rear 3.5mm jack), which are connected to the monitor, before I plugged in the monitors power. The monitor was turned on and there was a flash in the extension cord when I plugged the power in.

So I'm pretty convinced that, that flash fried my integrated sound card. One time I fried my GPU the same way, forgot to turn of the monitor before unplugging it and when I plugged it in again got the flash and GPU didn't work.

Also I got another sound card from a friend so I think I'm going to try to hook it up tomorrow. If you have any guidelines or tips I would really appreciate it.

The sound card was too old(didn't have drivers for windows 7). Hopefully I can get new one tomorrow.
