Windows 7: Microphone and MS Life Cam

Hi. Is it possible to use another (better) microphone with MS Life Cam. I plugged in a high quality USB microphone and it literally made the LIfeCam invisible to the OS. When starting the a NO Camera connected message came up. Even after disconnecting the new mic, Life Cam still could not be seen. I literally had to find and entirely new USB port to get it running again.

Is there a way or am I stick with the low quality mic in LifeCam? Any solutions?
