Built-in mic no longer detecting input

Hi, I tried chatting to my friend on Skype yesterday and found my built-in mic doesn't detect any input at all, but when I played music through the laptop she could hear it on the other end. I've also tried it on oovoo and facebook so Skype is not the problem. The drivers are up to date, everything's at full volume etc. It's a Realtek HD Audio and used to work fine. It's enabled and there are green bars next to it in the Recording tab in Sound but nothing is being detected when I try the Sound recorder. I've tried uninstalling and rebooting and that hasn't worked, nor has system restore. I have a feeling the problem might have been caused by plugging in my new external speakers into the audio jack. I have obviously tried using the mic both with and without the speakers. I was wondering if there were any other possible resolutions?

Many thanks,
