Had a weird issue with MP3s skipping, but my PC used FM to fix itself.
I had a strange issue crop up recently.
I have multiple HDD, my music is on one of my secondary drives. It's a 2tb, and my primary drive is a SSD.
All of a sudden, my music started skipping on the drive. Any MP3 file I played skipped. Mp4s worked fine, and all my other media with audio was also unaffected. Games, video, streaming, everything else worked. I didn't think it was my audio files, because it didn't skip in the same places every time.
It started with WMP. Just suddenly popped up when I tried to listen to some music while I was DLing some things.
I tried winamp and VLC thinking it was WMP. Everything still skipped.
I tried stopping my DL to see if it was a resource issue. Perhaps my HDD couldn't write and read at the same time? It was a pretty heavy DL after all. Nope. Still skipped.
I defragged, ran virus, malware, and ADWcleaner. Everything still skipped.
I tested the drivers and reinstalled my audio drivers. Still skipping, no change.
I restarted each time I did any of these things. Everything still skipped.
I tried moving the files to another HDD. [I've got 5 in my PC.] No dice, still got skipping music.
I had almost given up. I was about to resign myself to the fact that my music had gotten corrupted somehow. I've got it backed up, but it's a pain to reinstall and I'd have to reinstall everything that was on the drive, not just the music. I was planning on reformatting the HDD just to make sure it wasn't my HDD about to bite it.
On a whim, I decided to try Windows Media Center. Not even sure why I bothered at that point. I just noticed the icon in my tray and clicked on it. I figured it wouldn't make the problem worse at least.
It worked. No skipping. Left, tried WMP, no more skipping, same with VLC and Winamp.
I have absolutely no idea what happened. I was troubleshooting this mess for an hour, and just playing the music in Windows Media Center just made the problem disappear.
I'm relieved on the one hand, but at a complete loss on what exactly happened.
For no good reason, my computer used FM to fix itself. Oh well.
Just a note for anyone else who just suddenly has their music start skipping, try running it through WMC before you start spending a lot of time troubleshooting, defragging, or virus scanning. It might solve the problem like it did with me.
