Microphone output very low or hissing noise when mic plugged in
I've been having problems with my microphone on a Windows 7 desktop: very low volume and hissing feedback. Googling this problem it seems that it's a very common one. My mic worked fine on a Windows 7 laptop (good volume, no hissing) so the mic itself was OK.
I found the following article which solved the problem:
Resolving Microphone and Line-in Problems (Windows*7) | HP® Support
What I didn't realize is that the Playback properties levels have to be set. Once I changed these everything was fine.
The article is also a very good general trouble-shooting guide for Windows audio. I would highly recommend it.
BTW: this is an HP / Compaq article, but it applies to any Windows PC with Realtek audio (and maybe to others??). My desktop is a custom-build with an Intel DP64BG motherboard.
