Windows 7: No sound after format

So I've narrowed it down even further.
I found a temporary fix.

The front jack panel disables the rear due to it believing the front jack has something plugged in.
Got the rear panel to work again when I disabled it so I alter my question again.

Is there some way I can get both sides to work as in, why is my front panel thinking there is something plugged in when there's not.

It sounds like there may be a problem with the front panel jack or the wiring. Unplug (disconnect) the front panel audio connection on the motherboard and see if the rear works correctly. If it does, the problem is either in the wiring or the jack.

Many cases have two connections for the front panel headphone/mic jacks - one labled HD Audio and the other AC97. The HD Audio is the preferred connection, use that if you have it.

I have no idea how to do that, sounds like something I'd break before figuring it out.
Got anything to aid me in this? I prefer not touching the hardware without instructions.

Please note that it USED to work properly and I can't say that I've touched the cables after that.

One of the cables from the front panel that plugs into the motherboard is the cable for the front panel audio. Disconnecting this, as I previously noted would help in problem detecting or resolution.

Looking at the documentation for the motherboard, the front panel audio connector is the green connector on the lower left of the motherboard. If you want to give this a try, power off the PC first and then open the case and unplug the cable. Then power back up and set the connectors "normal" and see if the rear audio works OK. If it does the problem is in the cables or the front panel headset connector (the most likely problem). If you want to reconnect the front panel, power off the PC and then reconnect - NOTE there is one pin missing on the plug, make sure you orient the connector correctly before plugging back in.

With my luck I'll break the computer.
I guess I'll just have to accept it and use my temporary fix.

Either that or I'll tell a more handy friend if possible to look at that.
Thanks for your help.

I'll keep it open for the time being, as it has not been technically solved yet due to me not wanting to mess around the hardware at the moment.
