I am not sure this is a solution or if it'll even work but;
Try going into your sound config screen where you test the speakers, enable 7.1 and screen/check out 2nd set of rear speakers.

Tried that, doesn't work. In my normal setup, all of the speakers work in the test, but windows won't play any file in 5.1. In XP, everything I had (with exception to the things not encoded in 5.1) played in full surround. But in 7, absolutely nothing plays in 5.1 except the speaker test. So dumb...
yup i have the same problem i have sound-max on-board and i cant get full 5.1 in any applications only in test i try everything but no help... i read somewhere that if u put sound card on PCI slot then 5.1 will work perfectly so dump....
customers and Users question:
No 5.1 sound in Windows 7 AND Vista AND Vista SP1 AND
Vista SP2 ...... AND Windows 7 SP100 ... Why?
Microsoft answer:
For fix this Problem Please Go Back to Windows XP OR Windows 95
Try reassigning the line in jack to bass/center channel and plugging into it. Fix the no 5.1 problem for me. Or can uninstall the realtek driver and use the one that comes with windows 7.
I get 5.1 in Windows it is when i go to play a game that I only get two speakers working. Tests in windows config and Via HD both work all six speakers. Latest drivers i dont know what the heck.
Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version you might find a few solutions in that thread. Many people have different solutions all of em didnt seem to work for me. Try my solution on the last page :). hope u get it sorted
