Actually, Greg, there is. A nearby ESD can cause a reaction in a computer. I can get zapped on the pull chain of the light above my computer desk and it will cause a "bedoop" sound, just like the sound made when a USB device is disconnected. When the weather is cool and bone dry, just walking by the computer can make the "bedoop" sound.

Then surely something is wrong with the PC.
You identified the movement that causes this which is a start. I think I'd put the tower on a mat to test if the ESD is traveling through carpet. Other ideas?

Nothing is wrong with the PC; I get the same thing from my notebooks. No carpet; just vinyl tile. The computer has rubber feet and is on a finished wooden night stand.
An ESD sends out electromagnetic waves (you can hear it as static in a radio). If I get a zap from any of my light fixtures that have a pull chain and are turned off when I get the zap, the CFLs will faintly flicker. It's the same as holding a fluorescent lamp near a Tesla coil without drawing an arc from it; the lamp will glow. The same waves can be picked up by the computer's circuitry and trigger the "bedoop".

device beep when I walk away
I have this same ghost in my machine.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop. I5, 8gig memory, Win 7 Home Premium. No external devices attached, no power connector touched, wiggled, or removed. Standalone! I thought it was the webcam detecting my movement when I get up so I blacked it out with some black tape. Cell phones are far away and I have eliminated any WiFi connection or other Blackberry link. This has been driving me crazy for some time now and I just found this forum post. All that I do is get up after begin to walk away and ding! There is no indication on my task bar that any device has been added or removed.

Does the behavior persist even if you're running a boot disk like Peppermint3 - Create Live CD/DVD/USB To Use For Emergency Backup - Windows 7 Forums with the hard drive unplugged? This will remove the OS from possibility and narrow it to hardware.
How about if you unplug all USB devices, then all other devices including mouse and keyboard?

Same thing here (in Holland)! Sounds like a disconnect / connect usb beep. I covered the camera, disabled Bluetooth but no change. Nothing in the event logs.
Even emptied my pockets so that no electronic device can cause this.
Finally unplugged the mouse and ... found it!!!!
Fortunately no ghosts around here, at least they aren't messing with my laptop!
A cheap Chinese mouse causes this in my case. Can someone verify this?
