Windows 7: No midi output device

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
No midi output device

I have a “Teaching-you Music Theory” CD-ROM which I cannot play. I can play the individual audio/video files separately but not from within the program and cannot hear the voice-over commentary.
When the program loads there is a drop-down box to select the midi output device but nothing is listed. On my friend’s computer this box shows “MS GS Wavetable Synth”. We are both running Windows 7 and I have updated all the drivers so I cannot see why the disc will not work in my computer.
I have a similar problem with a program called Sense which I am using for an Open University course. I am offered a wide choice of musical instruments but, whichever one I pick, they all sound the same!
Any suggestions?
