    Microphone is NOT working?!

    Hi everyone,

Just today it came to my attention that my microphone, for some reason, just STOPPED working! I tried logging off and back on, restarting, disabling and re-enabling the mic, and NOTHING works! I have no idea what's wrong! If I try to record something, I can only hear it through one ear, and if not that, it just won't pick ANYTHING up and record static. It says that it's working when it really isn't. I have no idea how this happened. (I'm not using an external microphone nor do I have one. I'm using the built-in mic that's in my laptop.) Again, I have no idea what's wrong. I don't know what happened, what caused it, if there are specific symptoms... Nothing!

    Please help me...

Does the laptop have MUTE via some keyboard key(s) selection? Do you have sound at all?

    Otherwise:

Probably time to get a replacement, no microphone jack on the laptop?

That's OK, get a USB one, assuming you have a USB jack (buy a USB hub, if all USB ports are in use, too)

Cheapo pieces of hardware go bad, and a mic in a laptop is a likely candidate, yeah.

Right click on the volume icon in the taskbar - click "Recording devices"

Now go to Levels tab and make sure slider is set to 100% and is NOT muted (just make sure that the little blue speaker button doesn't have a red mark over it). I have seen, Windows, by default, mutes the mic.

...need more detail from OP I think, they said they were hearing sound through one ear, so that sort of eliminated to me just Windows volume control issue.
