You can run sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt (run as admin). If that does not fix it, do this: Repair Install

OP, if this is a Windows 8 system you know you are in the wrong forums? [noticed in your specs.]

There on eightforums.com someone can readily attach a Windows 8 version of the missing file and you can put it where you need it and reboot.

It's an INTERNAL OS audio related file and a system repair should put it back in place as well.

Restore - won't work despite no AntiVirus
Restore tells me it hasn't worked due to an Anti Virus. I turn off MSE and Restore still doesn't work. Computer has Malarebytes & Lavasoft (AdAware) for regular scans but only MSE for anti virus. Could firewall be getting in the way? Anyone encountered and resolved this problem?

I deleted my .dat file extention, will it still work if I re-create it
So, I was having problems with my .dat file type icon, and in frustration trying to get rid of the icon and start all over again, I deleted the file type in the registry. Will this cause problems in the future, even though I re-added it in the registry? I don't see any problems with them right...
