    metallic, tinny, buzzing artifact. please help!


    Hey guys, I've been getting this for some time now.

    Its off and on, very random. Its this tinny, metallic buzzing artifact, almost sounds like you're playing the sound through a pair of $2 speakers. I can usually get around this by going to control panel>sound and setting the default audio to HDMI, then back to SPDIF (that's what i have my amp hooked up to). But this "cure" only lasts for a short time. This happens with all sounds coming out of the computer, not limited to music.

    It's not loose connections, music source, the phone that's recording it or the speakers.
    It's not clipping either, neither the source nor the amplification.

    Do you have this problem if you use a headset or regular analog PC audio speakers?

    Also, are you using the ASUS supplied sound drivers? IF not, the ASUS supplied drivers are the preferred.

    I haven't used my headphones for an extended period of time, so can't tell you. I don't own any regular PC speakers

    I haven't installed the ASUS soundmax drivers on this install of win 7. I had it installed on my last install of vista and the problem was there as well. I doubt its driver issues

    Although you can fix it by changing the PC playback device, the fact that you had it in Vista suggests its not a "Windows 7" problem. Either something to do with the S/PDIF generation in the PC or something external to the PC.

    I have a recording studio and use digital audio for several interfaces.

    Hmm... maybe a chip on the mobo is ready to go...

    Not too long ago, my video card pooped on me. Hopefully its not a sign EVERYTHING needs to be replaced
