I need help with my audio, headphones and speakers.

ok i have windows 7 64 bit, before i updated my sound card my headphones would crackle with music, movies, any sound, now they don't crackle but the most annoying thing is when i unplug my headphones i have to click on the via hd sound deck icon at the bottom and click make speakers default, if i plug in headphones i have to do the same for the headphones in order for sound to work through which ever device i want. Imagebin - A place to slap up your images. how do i fix this where it works normally like its supposed too?

Where did you get the driver update? From ASUS for your specific PC model? or from some other source? If it wasn't from ASUS, that may be the problem. Non-Vendor specific drivers may or may not work properly.

If it was from ASUS, there may be a Windows/sound driver corruption. First thing to try is go to the Device Manager. There should only be the entry for the VIA sound and possibly an HDMI audio (if you have that). If there is any other entry, such as HD Audio Codec, RIGHT click on that entry and then LEFT click Uninstall. Then restart the PC and see if that fixes it. If not, go back to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the VIA sound and then LEFT click Uninstall. DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the VIA sound. Check to see if it is now working OK.

firebird, It just shows via hd audio codec under device manager. I did all that stuff you said and still does the same thing.

I got the update from the asus website it self for my exact same model.

Have you tried reinstalling the driver?

As a side note, which has nothing to do with your headphone/speaker problem, I see you have the mic as the default recording device. The Stereo Mix should be set as default, then if you use the mic it will still work or if you want to record any streaming audio from the internet you can do that (you can't if the mic is set to default). Actually with Stereo Mix set as the default recording device, any input can be recorded, or any input can be heard on the PC's speakers.

firebird, yes sir, I tried reinstalling the driver it is the same and I don't use the mic, no need too. Also I got rid of it totally went back to the old driver, because my speakers were very very weak when I tried using them. I couldn't hear anything out of the speakers.

With what you say you have tried, it suggests a possible Operating System problem.

Looking at the ASUS site, this appears to be a 2009 model PC. Did it come with Windows 7 or Vista? 2009 is the date on the sound driver. Look around and see if you can come up with a newer driver, not guarantee it will work or work any better.

It came with windows 7 64 bit home, I upgraded to ultimate but even in home it gave me the same issues and I have tried finding a newer driver but none that would work right.

You have two options, one as you say just keep what you have and "live with it". The other option would be to do a complete new install, but no guarantee that it will work.

The difference between the Home and Ultimate versions would not have anything to do with sound. Ultimate will support more than 12GB of RAM and has some other features that are primarily for business users.

I did do a complete reinstall the otherday thinking that might help, but it didn't. so like you said. "live with it", seems to be hardware more than anything. But I do thank you so much for your input and help.
