No audio output via DP to HDMI in windows 7. (but it works in Ubuntu)

Hello,

This is the weirdest problem I've ever encountered.

[I use thinkpad x220, Intel HD Graphics 3000, with windows 7 professional 64bit + ubuntu 12.10, in dual mode]

I've recently bought a new Toshiba LCD TV (it has 2 HDMI ports). I've also bought a 15 meter (50ft) HDMI-HDMI cable in order to connect it to my x220.
(I use a DP -> HDMI adapter. I have used it for the last year and a half. It has always worked for me and continues to work - so there's no problem with the adapter. see the explanation in the paragraphs below)

Upon connecting my x220 with the adapter and the 15m cable, I have noticed that while the video connection to the TV is working, the sound doesn't work. Windows doesn't recognize that there's a digital audio device connected to the x220 . It can only play audio from the speakers or headphones port.

Although all drivers are installed:

I wanted to figure out what is causing the problem so I started ruling out things.

I connected another laptop that has an HDMI port with this cable, and it was able to play video+audio to the TV. - so no problem with the cable.

I thought it's a problem with the DP in my x220 or the TV. I tried connecting the x220 with the adapter and a shorter HDMI-HDMI cable (2 meters cable) to the TV, and surprisingly, I got video + audio working:

Now I assumed it's a problem with long vs short cable. But then I booted into Ubuntu with the adapter and the 15m cable and everything worked! The x220 was transferring both video and audio signal on the 15m cable! And I could switch between enabling speakers or digital audio. - so it's not the long cable that is causing the problem.
Ubuntu recognizes an HDMI/DisplayPort audio connection on the long cable:

So I started assuming the problem is with windows 7.
No matter what I've tried (I updated all the drivers, tried checking the sound configuration, searched lots of forums, uninstalled/reinstalled the 'Intel(R) Display Audio' driver), nothing helped.

Can anyone figure this out? What is preventing Windows 7 (as far as I understand it) from transmitting audio on this 15m HDMI cable?

Any suggestion on how to resolve this?

Thanks,
lenovoX
