    Well I tried the plugin and it would play a note or 2 and quit. I rebooted in case that was it and even switched over to Creatives Audio creation mode, no go. Not to worry I'll try out some other audio players next week.

    what is your sample rate set at in windows playback devices? that plugin i think only works at 44khz and 48 not 96 or 192. like i said its old.

    for players i use jriver and like it but its hard to get used to the now playing setup it uses as apposed to normal playlists and if you just want to listen to music in a nice ui xbmc will do that to. jriver is also not cheap but can play basically anything and resample anything to anything if needed it changes my sound drivers accordingly for certain 192khz tracks for example. it is also simple to insanely complex so trial it if you can first.
