Problem with 7.1 setup Radeon HD 5770 and Onkyo TS RX608

Alright all, I am at desperation time as I have spent the last 5 hours browsing the web and trying everything I can think of without any success. It is very rare to have to ask for help and I am certain it will be the simplest thing. This has happened before and I have always managed to figure it out, but, it happens so rarely that by the next time I have forgotten what I did to fix it before. It was working just a few days ago and now it's not.

First my setup.
Asus P7H55-M Mainboard
AMD Radeon 5770HD
4G Ram
TX RS608 Onkyo Receiver
Panansonic PAE 4000 Front Projector.
HDMI runs to HDMI #1 (PC) on receiver & then HDMI out to Projector. No other hooksups other than Optical Coaxial from PC to TV/VCR on receiver which is disabled as I use the HDMI from the videocard.
Here is the problem that was working fine just days ago. When I go to sound/properties/AMD HDMI as my default sound then choose configure then click 7.1 setup and attempt to run, the sound comes from the three front speakers and sub just fine, but, when I click on the L/R surround and L/R rear surround the sound comes from the left or front speakers instead of the appropriate surround speaker. A week ago it worked fine. I have tried restarting the computer. the receiver, the Projector. I updated to the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers via auto update. I've installed the latest Realtek ATI HDMI driver V2.70. Uninstalled the AMD catalyst HDMI driver to see if that would help and I am at a loss. What am I doing wrong. As I said the frustrating thing is that it worked fine just days ago and the reason I know is because I find that every time I come down to watch TV I have to reset the 7.1 surround as for whatever reason it seems to want to default back to 2 channel after I turn the TV/Receiver off and back on.
Just to add I see that when I choose Realtek HD audio manager that the HDMI shows up in the latest update. If I choose 7.1 setup in this and run it, it is the same issue rear speaker sound comes through front speakers instead of appropriate rear surround speakers.
Also I see when I play a 7.1 movie and scroll through the receiver movie options it is indicating multichannel which it did when I watched the movie last week just not playing multichannel sound, front speakers only. The difference last week the sound was generated through all 6 speakers plus sub. Now when I play it the sound is only coming through the L/R/C and sub. No sound generated through surrounds unless I choose All Ch Speaker so this tells me it is not a speaker issue.
One more thing, I did also try a system restore to an earlier point when I know the sound was working and the result was the same.
