Microphone does not work with skype

PLEASE HELP!!! On skype the person on the other end can just BARELY hear me, I can hear them perfectly. I did the skype test call where my voice is recorded and played back to me and the same thing happened, I could BARELY hear my voice. I use skype for business as a counselor, so it's a major, major problem when my clients in other countries can't hear me. Help!!

Are you using the built internal mic in the PC or are you using an external mic?

Also, do you have the default Dell installed sound driver or do you have the generic Windows installed "HD Audio Codec"? If you don't have the Dell driver that is the first step.

There are many different Dell Inspiron 15 models. What is the exact model of yours?

Thanks so much for responding. I'm using the internal mic. I don't know much about computers, so I did a search for "HD Audio Codec" and no results were found. In the control panel on the screen having to do with the microphone it says "High Definition Audio Device". I'm also unsure of the model number, there are several numbers on the sticker on the computer, three of the numbers I see are: GFC-02087 X16-93648 00174-838-412-861 Are any of those the model number? Also, the headphones don't work. I hear audio perfectly through the built-in speakers, but the other person barely hears me, and the headphones don't work. This all started with the installation of Windows 7. The computer came with Windows 8 installed, I had a computer tech person to eliminate Windows 8 and install Windows 7. Thank you.

Those numbers do not mean anything to me. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and with my resources it still does not help. Dell lists the Insprion 15's with other numbers such as M5040, 3520, etc.

You can check what is actually installed, and I suspect that since it was "downgraded" to Windows 7 that it wasn't properly installed. Go to the Control Panel, RIGHT click on "Computer" and then LEFT click on "Properties". In the upper left of the panel that comes up is the Device Manager. Open that and then you can display what is in the Sound section of the Device Manager. If it just shows "HD Audio Codec" that is the problem and the correct sound driver is not installed.

However, as it had Windows 7 installed there is a chance that other required Dell applications were also not installed. There could be more than just the audio problem. And, depending on the specific model, Dell may not have the needed Windows 7 versions. You would have been better to leave it as Windows 8. With a program such as "Start8" the desktop will look and work exactly like Windows 7. I have a recording studio PC with Windows 8.1 and the Start8 and it works EXACTLY like my Windows 7 recording studio system.

If you send me a PM (Personal Message) with the Dell service tag number I can get the model number from that. However, do not post it on the forum as Dell considers that personal/private data and is not to be publically posted.

when you get your audio drivers fixed then make sure it matches in the skype settings.
your skype settings should match what you have for your windows audio and microphone sound settings

to check ,open skype and click tools/options then audio settings. there is a dropdown to select the audio and mic you need.
