How to get the best audio from xonar dgx

Hey guys. So i recently bought a xonar dgx 5.1 sound card to go along with the Razer tiamat 2.2s. Before getting detailed I'll tell you what I'm trying to achieve basically I want my sound card settings to be ample for this game i play. So the game is called crossfire and the objective of the game is to plant c4 and destroy and objective and hearing plays a large role. In order to become good money is everything so I assumed buying a sound card and a good headset would solve the problem. Sadly I was wrong I don't know any good settings for the sound card as well as I don't know what kind of a headset is good for this game as they do not list that in the system specs. I also want to add that people who are good at the game are telling my standard ear buds are better than a gaming headset which I find to be a little far fetched. So what I want to find out is what kind of a headset would maximize my ability to hear, what kind of settings I should apply to my soundcard and are they telling the truth about buds vs headset? Just to clarify the game mode in crossfire is called ghost mode and the headset is used for pinpointing. If you have any questions just post.
