No sound on YouTube in Chrome (only)

Hello,

I am aware that this subject has been tackled often, but I don't seem to find a solution. So, here goes:

- All of a sudden all films on YouTube have no sound.
- Only recent changes on my PC: did some usual cleanup with CCleaner and updated my Adobe Flash Player Plug-In (because my Avast antivirus program said I had to do this - even if I saw no change in Flash Player version)
- The problem only occurs in Chrome. If I play a file in say SMPlayer or Windows Media Player or Real or Quicktime - or whatever player: no problem. No problem either in whatever other browser: IE, Mozilla - you name it.
- I checked the aboutlugins Chrome page, found nothing untoward: as usual 2 Flash Player items installed. Tried to Disable one (pepperflash) and not the other (and vice versa). Tried to disable both, or none. Restarted the browser. Restarted the computer. Tried to rer-install FlashPlayer again. Nothing helps!

My uneducated guess is that problem started with the reinstall of the Flash Player (I cannot imagine that CCleaner did something untoward - all the more since I stop it from cleaning Chrome anyway).

Oh yes, when I transfer the YouTube URL to, say, SMPlayer - no problem: image and sound (but that was to be expected).

So, who can help me out with this problem? Attached a screenshot of the FlashPlayer plugin - with both "enabled" (but, as said, I tried with one enabled and the other not).

Thanks for a reply.

Does Chrome's sound work as desired on websites other than YouTube?

If not, then check your volume mixer.

Chrome sound works indeed as desired on websites other than YouTube! Volume mixer is OK. (Audio config is Realtek).

Thanks for the swift reaction...

Have you tried resetting Chrome?
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214?hl=en

How about setting up a new (temporary) Windows user/profile and testing Youtube's sound via Chrome in there?

Thanks for the follow up.

2nd suggestion first: did set up temp Win profile and, indeed, after testing YouTube in Chrome within that configuration, sound worked OK. So, my question: why in there and not in my own profile?

1st suggestion: if I do reset Chrome, will that not play havoc with all my Chrome settings? Or which ones will I have to customize again? The Chrome Help function is rather all over the place about the matter... In fact, can one return to one's original settings in Chrome (this is probably beyond the scope of this sound thread, but still...)

Thanks again for your help. At least, we know something more now...

Since we don't know exactly what is wrong with your Chrome profile...
...we don't know why sound fails in that profile for YouTube
...so we don't know what setting or settings to change.

Resetting Chrome probably will undo most of your customizations...
...and that is the point of resetting: it might fix the issue.

If you want, you can follow these steps...
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/142059?hl=en
...to backup your current profile and create a one.
But you still have to apply your customizations again.

Before resetting, I tried out something else: new user in Chrome. And, yes, when I do that - and import all my bookmarks etc. Sound in YouTube is as it should be in that new config. I think I'll have to resign myself to reset things...

Thanks for the info about preserving a current profile. However, I fear the "error" which has produced the sudden lack of sound in YouTube lurks somewhere in that profile...

Best,

haku7

I figured out this problem

My audio wasn't working on youtube either. After screwing around with all my audio options I found that setting the default format audio in Realtek manager to anything other than 192000 Hz fixed the problem. I guess youtube really doesn't like 192000 Hz.

I came to this forum after rebuilding my HP p6774y desktop after a hard drive failure. At first, I could not get any sound in any fashion but play around with the Realtek driver until I changed the audio channels to 7.1 surround. That got me sound in everything but Chrome. I reinstalled Chrome and Flash player several times and finally got non-you-tube sites to play sound after disabling the Shockwave Flash "Pepperflash". All that was left is youtube which would give a faint muffled sound. Here is how I solved this last issue: Right click the volume speaker on the status bar; select "Playback Devices"; highlight Speakers and click Properties; and go to the Enhancements tab. Under 'Sound Effects Properties" there is a "Setting:" dropdown. Mine was set to "None'. I change it to 'Generic" and youtube started producing sound. I spent 4 days looking for this; very simple. I hope this helps someone.
