New to windows 7 - poor audio output - help please !!!!!!!!

I have a DELL Precision 390 desktop (64bit) which for many years I was using Win XP Pro and was very happy with that especially the audio playback on windows media was very good for me.

I recently updated to Win 7 Pro, everything is fine apart from what I suspected was a deterioration in audio playback quality and volume. I find the audio settings limited compared to Win XP with no extensive controls. I am set to 16bit 41khz CD Quality.
If I set to Studio Quality, are there any advantages / disadvantages ?

I also download a lot of MP3 audio and burn CD's so I'm not sure if this lack of audio quality is being affected here too ?

I see these audio codecs on the web which I am reluctant about in respect of unwanted programs being installed etc..

Therefore can anyone advise a tried and tested codecs/drivers to improve my audio quality ? If so any particular settings I should select ?

I would appreciate very much for any help and advise please !!!!

    Easy! Get a new soundcard.

That does not sound like a codec problem. You probably have the wrong driver for your soundcard. Chances are that there is no better driver for Windows 7 available, but you can check with the manufacturer of the soundcard.

If none of that works, get a soundcard that has Windows 7 support.

Many thanks for the advice given so far. I'm thinking of getting a sound card and I've got my eyes on the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy FX

Sound Blaster Audigy Fx - 5.1 PCIe Sound Card - Creative Labs (UK)

Any feedback on anyone who has used this sound card would be much appreciated.
