Headphones not detected, internal speaker works

I have a similar problem to previous post, 28-Oct-14, title: "Headphones not being recognized correctly or playing sound". This is on my friend's Toshiba laptop, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and the Dell headphones used to work (they are not currently detected by Windows). The same headphones work fine on my desktop computer. I don't have access to his laptop except when at the library, where his WiFi signal is poor. I'm writing this at home after verifying the headphones work on my computer. This problem seems to be fixable, I am hoping. Thanks.

Hard to troubleshoot. As a guess, I would suspect a problem with the headphone jack or the internal wiring as many I/O jacks are on a small circuit board that is connected to the main motherboard.
