Since you will not fill in the SPECS, so we can see what Sony Vaio your using... What is the Model #.
when you open control panel --> open sound --> then open sounds.
make sure you have Windows Default checked.
move down an see if you can hear any of the MS default sounds, like startup or alerts .

If you move on the control panel --> system --> device manager
do you have any yellow markers or any RED markers.

Well, I did a clean install and it's still silent. I've noticed though that there are none of the Windows default sounds. Yet Windows Default is listed as my sound option.
    Any further ideas?
    Thanks

This is a very strange case to me, and I know of no solution off the top of my head (as you can probably see). The best I can do is experiment and try different things. So, be patient with this, as I am learning too.
Go to this page, and download "Vista, Windows7 Driver(32/64 bits) Driver only (Executable file)". Do not run the file yet. Go into Device Management again and uninstall all audio drivers. Do not reboot the computer. Run the executable you just downloaded, and reboot as necessary. Let's see what happens.

Hmmm. Well I tried that, and still no sound.
    This is all very odd.
