can not eliminate sounds even with NoSound selected

I've wiped the disk clean.
I've installed Win 7 ultimate sp1 64-bit amd all updates installed.

Only after all of that, installing MS office and a few of my standard programs, did I worry about why the Windows starup sound and ALL other window sounds were present.

Went thru personalization to themes and to select the "No Sounds" for sound, I specified no windows startup sound.

Everything I've tried has failed.

I've run system file checker a couple of times and it comes out clean as a whistle.

The only thing I've done out of the ordinary for me is to migrate the settings from my 32 bit version (also ultimate) into this version.

And no I don't consider deleting all the .wav files to be a solution.

That is strange. Did you also save the sound scheme and your Windows theme afterwards?

I saved, I tried everything I could think of and every combination thereof.

After banging my head against the wall for a few hours, I threw the baby out with the dirty water, that is, once again wiped the disk clean and did a fresh install, but without using the file generated by the migration wizard.

I had, already as a safety measure, made a vhd image of the old 32 bit system and had used robocopy to make a backup of docs, pics, videos, etc.

This time I simply did everything by hand and used robocopy to put the saved data back into their locations.

The install of win 7 and office 2010 went smoothly in both cases and quickly. What takes an unbelievable amount of time is the umpteen updates to win 7 sp1 and to office 2010.

Also for anyone doing a fresh install, some of the .net related updates take so much time that you would swear that your computer was hung. Even I was surprised, and a couple of times used Ctrl + Shift + Esc to pop up the task manager so that I could verify that the update was actually running and not hung.

The migration wizard also apppeared to have interfered with the install of a couple of programs, especially the verizon access manager which use with my usb modem/wireless verizon stick.

Without the "migration", I've experienced no problems or peculiarities and the laptop is performing well, even though I've only got 4 GB ram. Also all of the "stock" drivers are working well and haven't needed to go to the Toshiba site to fetch a driver.

If this keeps up, I'll be recommending to others to go the 64 bit route if possible. So far, all microsoft software and all of the app software I use is performing as well or better.

I'm happy to hear it's working great now for you. You might consider creating a slipstream Windows 7 SP1 installation disc with all of the current Windows Updates included in it as well. This way it would eliminate having to install the Windows Updates included in the slipstream. It's a bit of work and time to get it created, but it'll be well worth it.
