windows 7 latency issues...soundcard?

Can anybody help with my latency issue. I use Audacity to record, but since purchasing dell optimus with windows 7- I cant record due to latency issues. I tried a few sound cards from my tech, but they either distorted or had the same latency issues.
Can anybody recommend a decently priced soundcard that is DAW(and windows 7) friendly?

I have a Recording Studio. If you are showing Latency with the Resplendence Latency Mon or DPC Latency Checker, those are PC system latency and not sound latency.

On the other hand, PC sound cards are notorious for poor latency. Even a separate SoundBlaster sound card will have poor audio latency. A USB Connected Recording Interface unit will give you better latency. Depending on how many channels you want, there is the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 that is popular. There are those from other brands such as Presonus, MAudio, Roland Duo-Capture, etc. Go to www.sweetwater.com and look at the USB recording interface units. I like Sweetwater over others as they give you a free 2nd year warranty on equipment.

I use Roland interfaces in my recording studio. My primary interface is a Roland Studio-Capture and my backup is a Roland Octa-Capture. I use Sonar X3 as my recording DAW software.

Let me clarify a bit...I want to record bare bones multi tracks on audacity or a similar program...I'm looking for a decent cheap sound card to begin with...every other computer I've had let me record with fine quality...all of a sudden windows 7 comes along and everything goes to hell!
Should I look into a usb interface? If so- how does that work with a sound card input?

kayfabe58, do you mean that you're getting latency in your audio output? For example, you've plugged an instrument into your audio input, and you're using the headphone output to listen to your audio, but there's some latency? If so, ASIOforAll might be a good solution. I use it with stock low-end onboard audio, and get really low latency.

ASIO4ALL is iffy. For some it works OK, for others it causes problems. If you have a device that is WDM only and not ASIO, ASIO4ALL can emulate ASIO for that device but as noted for many it can cause other problems.

PC sound cards have poor latency. A USB recording interface, such as I referenced, does not use the PC's sound card. It becomes the sound card for recording/recording playback.

right now the latency is the lapse of time when I hit a keyboard note and when I hear it through the speakers...it's roughly a half beat behind (live sound-not recorded)

In previous years the Asio(sic) has tightened up mutitrack latency- but this input live sound latency is my issue

The Optimus is NVIDIA video technology. It shouldn't have anything to do with sound.

What Model Dell do you have? e.g. Insprion and model number, XPS and model number, etc.

How do you know if your Soundcard is having issues?
Well, recently I've had Sound problems, however, they're not too bad. It could be that I have to rotate the headset plug in the computer, else I will only hear sound on one ear? Sorry my english isn't the greatest. I've tried this on multiply headsets, they all experience the same issue, so it's...
