    where?

Here are some updates on the stutter problem. Both solutions were picked up from the Windows 7 Beta Microsoft TechNet Forum.

You can change the speaker settings to 16 bit, 22059 Hz (AM Radio Quality) but you will loose some in the sound. If you have lousy speakers it won't matter.

The best solution is to download the conexant ac97-61410599.exe driver file. Open this file using WinRAR (WinZip won't work). Extract camc6aud.sys and camc6hal.sys. Rename them camcaud.sys and camchal.sys (in short, remove the 6 from the filename. Copy these files to c:\windows\system32\drivers\.

Be sure to reboot the system so the new drivers will load.
I have an HP dv8305. Where can I find this file you mention? Every search result I come up with asks for money or a site membership.

Nope. Didn't work either. I thought I had tried that one before, and I was right. I ran the install utility AND I renamed and copied the files. No change. I'm stuck with my USB device for now.

Alright welll. heres the best thing to do.... Get a portable HDD and back up all your files to there and use that as your new HDD for all else that's not programs. Reinstall Windows 7 using your upgrade disc. Its just the startup thingy... It will automatically fix all drivers. i fixed mine that way. and i will continue to do so instead of waiting with no sound. I called HP support and they gave me this crap to.... its not worth spending the for this support. Just wait ....

Nope. Been there. Done that. Not my first rodeo with working with Microsoft OS's. Been working with Windows 7 since June. I had it working at one time but had to repartition the drive to give it more space. Now, after giving the OS 35GB of space to grow into and reinstalling from a fresh wipe, none of the 4 dozen or so drivers I've tried, in many different ways, have worked. I ended up going out and buying a cheap $6 USB audio adapter that works for now. Once Microsoft/Conexant and Realtek get it together finally, I will be able to stop using it. But for now, I'm stuck with it.

I've tried doing all the installs as administrator(I'm the ONLY user of the laptop, why some installs require this when I AM the admin is beyond me), every flavor of compatibility mode, and by just extracting out the actual driver files and copying them to system32\driver and system32\drivers\etc. NOTHING has worked. I've even done driver updates through Control Panel.

yeah. i would have done that to... at least till these things get straigtened out. I always do this with other OSs like Ubuntu and my GFX card.

I never tried the file rename approach, but found this link on the HP Support Site which solved the AC 97 driver issue for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on HP DV 8900 laptop:

I am using gigabyte in built realtedk audio chip, it was working fine with XP2 & XP3 but it gives a little lower sound with windows 7 and also the Bass is very low. I used all latest drivers from gigabyte and realtek as well, but the problem is same. I am using John Barrel's 5.1 Home theatre and it was working fine with my previous Windows. I love windows 7 & and i dont want to quit.

MY FIX: Running hp Pavilion 1660se with Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit).

I had tried several of the different fixes I found recommended for hp Pavilion 1660se - the best solutions I found was doing the above - to rename the 2 camc6aud.sys and camc6hal.sys files - rename them without the 6, and then save to the c:\windows\system32\drivers folder.

I tried the reboot after doing so, and nothing. After some thought, I decided to logon as administrator (need to enable the administrator account by going into Manage). When I logged in as administrator, boom, the sound blared out. I logged off, relogged in with the normal account, and sound was still present.

I had forgot this type of proceedure from the early Vista days, where some applications just would not work unless you logged in as administrator, and installed with that method.

    Good luck!
