I suspect something has happened to the HDMI connection. Normally, when an HDMI cable is connected Windows will automatically switch the default playback device to HDMI.

Try recycling the HDMI Audio and see if that helps. Go to the Device Manager, Right click on the entry for the Intel Display audio and then RIGHT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the driver. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Intel Display Audio. This will fix any Windows corruption.

If this does not fix it, reinstall the Intel video drivers. Then check to see if it works OK.

yes the hdmi cable works fine, ive tried a couple the one with my sky and my Playstation, they work fine with them. I dont think its the HDMI i think its my laptop itself because i cant change any of the audio devices to anything else, its like its just stuck on the speakers and headphones option.

so i tried running the first steps again and when i went to the intel video drivers they wasn't there so i tried going to the intel website and tried to download the driver update utility however wouldn't install because the time stamp or certificate could not be verified. Any ideas with this?

As this is a HP, check the downloads for your specific model at HP.
