the crackling? seems it really is a latency issue. installed asio, and the asio foobar plugin, routed it through my realtek drivers (latest version), jacked latency samples to 96 on both in/out, unchecked resample option, turned buffer offset to 0. boom, no more crackle.

set output in foobar back to directsound. bam, crackle was back.

that asus tech had no idea what they were talking about, or is under orders to blame someone else, or something equally stupid.

    latency can be a pain.

    run; DPC Latency Checker
while playing audio, if it spikes above the green line, you've got a latency issue. period. so if you have crackle, that should spike above the green line, etcetc.

try it, see. you may be surprised.

I was checking the 16k bar on the equalizer (Win 7 x64) and I don't think it is doing a dang thing.

Could someone else try that slider and see if they hear any change. ver 6.0.1.5995

Ok, this is odd, note, I'm on Win 7x32.

All of the other EQ sliders operate in real time, the 16K slider requires you stop, make the eq adjustment, then restart your music player. I used extreme setting just to make sure this was what's going on.

See if that's it on your system.

There's something going on like that after restarting Winamp. The effect seems small, and on my system , if you lower the 16k EQ realtime it drops, but won't increase realtime.

    Very odd.

I definitely have a latency issue causing noise over my sound.
I found that by using the DPC Latency Checker V1.2.0 (DPC Latency Checker), I can see that after system startup, latency is good (in the green levels), but after running a day or so, it's perpetually spiking (running in the red). This is when I hear the horrible crackles and stutters in my sound card.

If I then disable the network adapter (NIC), latency immediately drops to green levels and sound is good. However, if I then enable the network adapter, it immediately spikes perpetually into the red and I hear the crackles and stutters.

I have to reboot to reset the condition so that it's running in the green (so that I can listen to music without horrible crackles and stutters).

I tried swapping the network adapter but I have exactly the same issue with both network adapters. I've also swapped several sound cards, video cards and such, updated the BIOS and all drivers and every other imaginable troubleshooting step.

    This is driving me nuts!

    Thanks bundles for any suggestions!!

I've got it solved on my computer, and it is NOT a latency prob.

Downloaded a realtek driver from 5898_PG281_VISTA_TurnOff_PullMode_Upd.zip. installed, rebooted and perfect 5.1 sound.

Have it running now for a few days, computer restarted twice ( 2x seperate chkdsk on external HDD startup), otherwise its on 24/7 as I use this one to store all the media for entertainment over the Wi-Fi troughout the house.

Hope I could help any1 with this post
