    Ran the installer--

    Uninstalled previous drivers
    rebooted
    Installed new drivers
    rebooted
    Back to work.

    Things worked exactly as advertised.
Given that Realtek sound on my systems is working fine, I find that the extreme inconvenience of doing an uninstall/reinstall and thus losing all of my saved "custom EQ" presets far outweighs any possible benefit present in the "latest and greatest" driver version.

Given that Realtek has made it impossible to preserve these "custom EQ" presets across an uninstall/reinstall, this is simply a "deal breaker" for me. I can take screenshots of my presets, to look at when trying to recreate them precisely (on a new Windows install, or a new driver version install if I must), but this is again imprecise because Realtek has failed to put any type of digital readout on each of the EQ sliders.

There is no "flyout help" when hovering the mouse over a slider, nor is there a digital number at the top of each slider giving its +/- setting offset from +0... either of which would allow the user to exactly recreate a preset after a new driver install. So even taking a series of screenshots for each EQ preset is only a "visual assistance" when recreating them, rather than an exact roadmap as to what you're shooting for precisely.

So other than manually writing down on paper "how many clicks" it takes to push each slider up to produce each of your presets, the sheer annoyance of having to go through this every time a new driver is installed makes it something I rarely do. Avoid it like the plague, unless it's absolutely necessary.

The Realtek site is still not playing ball for me. However, the combined 32/64 bit Vista/W7 R268 executable file is available from Major Geeks.

Thanks for the other links. It's as though Realtek have switched their servers off once these other sites have got hold of the files.

You mean the orange icon for the Realtek HD Audio Manager?

It's supposed to be auto-started at Windows boot, because of its Registry entry (as shown by MSCONFIG):

Is the item still shown present and "checked" for you if you run MSCONFIG? Or has it disappeared?
