XP sound drivers are NOT compatible with newer OS'. Newer OS, starting with Vista handle some audio functions different than XP. And, with a Dell many of these require a Dell specific driver to operate properly.

If this was a Dell that was upgraded from XP to Windows 7, there may not be any driver available.

Some of the older XP machines will work with the generic, basic function Windows installed "High Definition Audio" Driver (Codec). But as this is a generic basic function driver not all function may work or work properly. In these cases a separate Windows compatible sound card is needed to regain full functionality. As this is a laptop, a USB connected sound card may give you the full functions.
