How record internally the sound I hear from the speakers?

I wonder what it would take to record (using e.g. Audacity) the sound leaving my sound card? Lets say I listen to a newscast and want to keep the entire thing or snippets of it for reference - what would I need to do that?

Windows (7) reports under the Sound/Recording tab (right-click speaker icon in notification area): 'no audio devices are installed'.

Audacity says when I press 'record': 'Error while opening sound device.'

Thanks

Yeah, thanks but that don't cut it. The newscast example was just an...example. There's a gazillion occasions where this would be useful. I should have just asked 'I wonder what it would take to record (using e.g. Audacity) the sound leaving my sound card?' etc.

You need your sound card installed and have "Stereo Mix" set as the default Recording device.

As no audio devices are installed, that is the first step. Get your on-board (on the motherboard) audio working, assuming you have on-board audio. If not, you will have to install a compatible sound card.

Post a screenshot of the Device Manager, Sound section. Also, what is the exact model of the ASUS motherboard, so I can research if it has audio and if it is Win 7 compatible.

Thank you fireberd. You say: 'You need your sound card installed...' and 'As no audio devices are installed...'

But that can't be true, there is some sound facility integrated with the motherboard. I am listening to music right now, I just can't record.

But sure, I would get recording possibilities (and better sound) with a reasonably good sound card. I will get that, then when it's properly installed, I'm sure Audacity will find it or else I can point to it in the Audacity options.

Your statement in the initial post
Quote:

From that, it usually means there is no sound device installed.

Please post the requested screenshot.

Audacity defaults to "Stereo Mix" as the sound source.

Hmm well why not hook up an external recording device and flick the switch when you want a recording?
