Windows 7: no line in

no line in

I've recorded old LPs and CDs through the LINE IN input option in my old XP. But my new Windows 7 machine, with integrated sound card shows only a microphone option. Recording with this (onto CD Wave program) is distorted. Could they really have "improved" this platform by eliminating the ability to record sound? Any suggestions about how I might use what I've got- or download something safe that will help me out?
Many thanks

Hi and welcome

Any idea what integrated chip you have?

Some of the new model Dell desktops have a combination Mic/Line In and it autodetects what is plugged in. Probably some of the other PC Vendors are doing this too. Have you tried that with your new system?

Many thanks for your quick responses. I am new to forums.
This (Toshiba Satellite) apparently has 2 possible adjustments for Reatek High Def.microphone recording levels: microphone and microphone boost. I've played around with these and gotten a sound that's OK one moment, then distorted the next... perhaps the microphone boost should be off? Don't see any other possibilities.

Help files indicate that there should be a line in option.

Not sure what integrated card this is-

Thanks!

You could always try using a Sound Editor such as Audio Editing Software - Sound, Music, Voice & Mp3 Editor

Thank you.
My experience has been, though, that similar programs all require that your imput be set through your Windows platform sound system.
