What happened to all of the 7.1 speakers?

A couple of years ago 7.1 speakers were all the rage. Now, even creative Labs has stopped selling them, along with Logitech and other companies. What happened and why? I mean what is the point in having 7.1 sound with only 5.1 speakers available?
