Help with mp3 files

I can't modify anything in the details tab under properties of some of my mp3s. I've taken ownership of the file and still can't do it.

Hey Ben,
It seems taking ownership of the file should work. I am not presenting a fix, but rather a work-around.
Normally such things are against my personal beliefs, but since it has been 3 hours since your post and nobody has reponded, here we go.

First, try editing the ID3 tags using a third-party program, such as MP3 Tag. If that does not work, your files are wacky.

Try converting them into mp3s again. I know it seems pointless, as they are already mp3s, but in the process, you will create new files with the same musical data. I recommend Pazera Free Audio Extractor for your purposes.

Hope it works,
~Jonathan

I've got similar problems here and it appears to be something to do with the tag data. I found that changing the file's tag data to version 2.3 using a prog like ID3-TagIT3 corrected the problem.
I'm not sure if this is a Windows7, MP12 or MP3 problem but at least this seems to be a workaround for the time being. Personally I think it is MP12 that is the culprit - I've also got random problems that keep cropping up, like mis-reading the size of files as 0 bytes.

WMP12 has played all of my files just fine, but I have also been pretty diligent with keeping my tags in order.
Much easier to go through and make any adjustments with MP3Tag, as Jonathan_King mentioned, than to have to deal with the whole Windows "take ownership" business.

Hi ben71r,

3 ideas

1. As you open the file and go properties, uncheck the read only attribute.
2. Back the file up and on the backup version 'Remove Properties and Personal Information', can you now edit it?
3. Try the take ownership script that I have attached in the ZIP file. Merge it, then right click on teh mp3 and select 'take ownership', now try to change it. You can remove this functionality with the second reg file in the zip folder.

lastly, try

Over the weekend I got a chance to fully use MP3tag to 'heal' my collection of 10k files - it is certainly a brilliant program and really easy to use. I found that simply re-saving the files was sometimes enough to fix them. Also, stripping all of the unneccessary stuff (adware, obscenities, random text etc) from tags was a good move too.
