can't set front jack as default audio output (notebook)

    Hi
!'ve got a probelm with my compaq 615
i had a problem with my audio quitting on me after the laptop went to sleep (which required a reboot) so i reinstalled the drivers (IDT HD)
now my laptop speakers are set as the default audio device and my headphone jack is set as the default communications device .. what kind of nonsense is that..
anywho.. all efforts trying to tell the pc i want the headphones as default speakers were in vain... it won't change any settings
simply disabling the speakers isn't a real solution either because i would still like to be able to use the media keys on my keyboard to adjust the volume.. i can't use them on a device that isn't the default however
i tried reinstalling the drivers aswell with no results

does anyone know what could help?

recently the laptop startet to kill my sound after sleep mode again
so now it's basically audio crippled
    never happened with vista
guess i'll just have to downgrade

i have the exact same problem with my hp mini.
i don't have enough experience with W7 to know if it's that or something to do with netbooks? but as far as i can tell, W7 seems to be doing nothing but causing problems where there weren't any before. I plugged in my speakers wanting ALL my sound to go through them...but it's registered my speakers as a headset and wants it to be my "default communication device", so only skype, etc sounds go through my speakers, everything else goes through the crap netbook speakers...i have no idea why. if anyone sees this and knows, really need your help!
