old asus mobo can't detect sound with windows seven

this is my scenario...

i installed a fresh windows 7.
i'm using an onboard audio.
my motherboard is P5ND2-SLI.
obviously the sound wont work (i got the red X at the volume icon) without the latest windows 7 driver.
after i installed the latest driver (6.0.1.6305), the red X is no more (the driver is succesfully installed) but i still cant hear any sound even though the equalizer is moving when i play an mp3 or movies.
its a realtek ac'97 audio.
btw. im using a usb-powered speaker.
anybody have this kind of problem?

i also have 1 unknown device called SM Bus Controller.
i suspect its my firewire standalone device. i have no driver for that so i just let it be.
i didnt use it anymore anyway.

thanks in advance for your assistance.

p/s: this is where i downloaded my driver

<i>p/s 2: i posted this post before in the [solved] thread. i assume that is why nobody gave me a response :P

Hii and welcome

Since the driver is installed and the volume flucates in the EQ there must be a setting to mute the speakers. right ckick the speaker icon and see if the mute buttin is highted,

Hello

Comparing my issue with others and searching through the intertubes' recesses, I came to the conclusion my machine has the exact same problem as this thread's original poster, including the mysterious 'SM bus controller' conflicting device; installed all the latest Windows updates, downloaded AC97 audio drivers both from Realtek and Asus' support pages, and still no go.

Other than acquiring a sound card and circumvent the whole Windows 7/mobo compatibility issues altogether, I don't see what can be done to resolve this thingamajig.

Is there a hotfix for this thing, maybe? Please let me know if you have any ideas or answers
