Windows 7: headphone mic does not work in windows 7 ultimate

hey i am having a problem in using the headphone mic it just do not work it worked fine in windows vista. i cannot record anything and cannot use voice chat i u know what to do plzzzzzzzzzzzzz tell me i am really new to this windows 7 i installed it just yesterday night plzzzzzzzzzzz guys help me out

What steps have you done?
What sound card?
What headset and mic you have?
Have you looked in the control panel under sound and see what is selected as your microphone and speakers?
In Control Panel, System, Device Manager do you see any exclamation points on the list of hardware devices?
Are you sure you have the plugs in the correct ports of the MB?
Do you have the latest MB Bios for your sound chip (if on MB)

Any information will be helpful to help you correct your problem.
