I found a old 8738 CMedia card and installed it(a lot better than mine soundmax)And I found out that it produces only 2.1 not 5.1(i have 5.1 system). It seems not to recognizing the other speakers....it works on xp but not in win7.On my soundmax onboard 5.1 works even on stereo music and films by turning on Sonic Focus in drivers.

aqth3r welcome to the forums.

If you haven't you can get the driver for that card from here,

C-Media Electronics, Inc.

Not sure about the beta drivers for Windows 7, but you can try the one for the CMI8768 for Vista it should work just as well (I had a look in the INF's from the Vista driver and it has the device ID's for most, if not all of the CMI8738 cards as well).

Assuming the C-Media software installed with the drivers (been a long time since I used a C-media based card, but it used to with the reference C-Media drivers) you should have a control panel that looks something like this,

C-Media-Controls-1.jpg

if so, play around in it with the settings to see if you can get 5.1 working.

Just wondering, you any idea who actually made the card? May or may not make any difference, but could help.

It may have a C-Media chip on it, but they didn't make the card, just the chip. Worse comes to worse you can also try the Vista driver from here (they don't have a 7 driver yet),

http://www.dmmdownload.com/product_search.php

for their XtremeSound 5.1 card (another card using the CMI8738 chip).

Soundblasters, Hauppauge Tuners, and several other PCI solutions have trouble under 64-bit Vista and 7 when over 4GB of RAM is installed. The reason? PCI cards map portions of their address space into RAM. More than 3GB of flat address space was unheard of when the cards were designed so they map the card into the 3-4GB space. Since Windows is using that space too you get a conflict.

Try this -- run msconfig, under boot tab, advanced options, temporarily limit maximum memory to 3GB and reboot. Uninstall and reinstall the driver software and see if that fixes it.

Seems there are several varieties of that chip. Open Start, type devmgmt.msc and press enter. Expose the device you're having issues with and double click it. Choose the Details tab and then the Hardware Ids from the drop-down. Please post that data here.

Uninstall anything from control panel related to any drivers you've tried then remove that device from device manager and make sure to check the box to "delete the driver software". Then try installing this:

http://www.cmedia.com.tw/Upload/Download/Driver/PCI-8738-091211-7.12.8.1740(W7-RC-01).zip

It has all the port assignments in the inf file correctly setup for Windows 7.

Multichannel is working so it must be a Xear setting now. Might help to ensure that Windows sees all the jacks. Click the volume control in the taskbar tray (lower left of the screen) then click the speaker icon. Make sure the jacks all show up there. If not you might be in 4-chan mode in Windows not Xear.

Right click volume control in tray select playback devices, speakers, configure and then you should be able to set 5.1 mode therein.
