Sound on Windows Media Player distorted through HDMI

Hi, I am running a Dell XPS1530 on Windows 7 64bit. I recently tried out the HDMI cable on my laptop. Video quality is excellent and sound as well. However, when I try playing movies, Windows Media player gives a loud crackle then my sound goes off. Playing some videos (mostly tv series) is fine. So I assume it is the sound output of the movie. Can someone give me advice on how to fix this?
