    yet another no sound thread

hi, i've had win7 pro running for over a month with very few problems, but for the last few days i haven't had any sound. i have a lenovo thinkpad t61 - my speakers are soundMAX integrated digital HD audio, and my spdif interface is soundMAX integrated HD audio as well. the speakers are set as a default device, the spdif interface is not. the drivers are up to date, as far as i can tell.

i don't get any sound through any applications, and i've run the troubleshooter to no avail.

when i click the volume icon in the lower left, i get the slider bars and when i move them i can see the green level meter move, indicating that i should be hearing some sort of sound.

this has happened occasionally before, but it seems to go away if i restart. not this time, though.

i think this might have something to do with a recent batch of windows updates, as i can't think of anything else that's changed on my laptop in the past few weeks. any ideas as to what could be causing this and how i can fix it?

Let's eliminate a factor, and test your speakers in another machine. Simple test, won't take long.

Have you tried a System Restore to get to a point before the problem started?

sorry, i should have clarified that these are the internal laptop speakers and not an external set. also, id prefer to not have to do a system restore if at all possible. any other troubleshooting ideas?

Go ahead and do the system restore. Windows 7 has a feature that allows you to scan for programs that will be affected. It will tell you exactly what you need to reinstall.

On the other hand, maybe it is a good thing. Obviously something caused the problem, and hopefully a System Restore will fix it,

If you still don't want to, I can understand.

You installed some updates... ok, here is what I'd try first.
In Device Manager, the audio system looks good correct? No errors or exclamation points.

First, toggle between the digital out as the default output device and then back to the speakers audio out. Simplistic yes, but I've found that sometimes, after updates this restores the audio.

Right click on the MS taskbar speaker icon, select Playback Devices, next select speakers. Do you have configure and property buttons? Select configure and make sure it's set to stereo, and test. Select properties and look over the available selections, if you have enhancements.. try disabling, set the audio output to 16-bit 44.1.

fixed it - i followed ap's advice and turned the spdif on and off, and then i tested the regular speakers and they worked fine. for some reason, the volumne and mute buttons on my keyboard don't work, but that's no big deal. thanks everyone for you help!

    Glad to hear it worked...

I wonder if this fix would work for some of the other users reporting "no sound".
